Tammany made a conscious effort to evoke the image of Federal Hall, where George Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the United States.

The last headquarters for the infamous political machine formed in 1788. Within a decade of the hall’s construction in 1929, Tammany had lost its virtual monopoly on state and local government, due to scandal and corruption.
