Dorie Miller Residential Cooperative

Doris “Dorie” Miller was a cook on a Pearl Harbor-based battleship during World War II. After the artillery gunners on his ship were killed, he left the kitchen (which was against the rules), and took over the gun to shoot down Japanese planes over Pearl Harbor. On its own, the housing cooperative should be a place that matters because of him. Additionally, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Clark Terry and Jimmy Heath all lived in that co-op. A little further away, in Addersley Park, lived Milt Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and others. (March 2012)
