This post office is a WPA masterpiece for human beings built on a human scale. A series of crescents radiates outwards from the mail room. The facade mirrors the inner workings of the building. The inner workings mirror the facade.
Seinfeid’s fictional Newman once worked here and non-fictional postal workers continue to work here and serve their community in a structure that honors them and their work.
The building’s scale is about human day to day endeavor… should an “alien” sprout out of its guts a la the Hearst Building it would be ruined. (July 2006)
