The Ardea was built as a “hotel-boarding house” in 1893 by George A. Hearn, the owner of a large department store on 14th Street. Intended for the families of Hearn department store executives, each apartment had three bedrooms and a maids quarter. The architect John B. Snook designed the Ardea, giving it elegant iron balconies and refined brick and brownstone detailing.
