Edward Durrell Stones Gallery of Modern Art building on Columbus Circle was built in the 1960s to contain the collection of Huntington Hartford. The Hartford collection was a standout for its time, often critical of the aesthetic standards set by the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum. The collection included works by Millais, Burne-Jones, Puvis and Moreau, alongside the established canon of Courbet, Pisarro, Monet and Derain.
