In the 1940s-50s, it was one of the most beautiful movie houses with gold leaf, velvet hangings and an organ. It was a first-run house; movies stayed for weeks. Neighborhood groups went by “parish”–people identified each other by parish. East of Broadway were Jewish, German and Italian shopkeepers. The mix on the street was also in the theatre.
