Glaser’s Bake Shop opened in 1902 at 87th Street and 1st Avenue. Three generations later, this neighborhood institution is still owned and operated by the same family. (May 2010)

Glaser’s Bake shop has been serving sweets and pastries to the Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan for over one hundred years. After emigrating from Bavaria, John & Justine Glaser established their bakery at 1670 First Avenue in 1902 to offer a taste of home to the German emigrants that had already been residing in this area for decades. Herbert Glaser Jr. now runs the little shop his grandparents started so many years ago. While bakers once labored 24/7 to meet the demand of neighborhood families, today, due to the neighborhood’s large singles population, the bakery’s main attraction is the black and white cookie, still baked fresh daily along with their acclaimed doughnuts, brownies, coffee cakes and more.

Visiting the bakery is truly a step back in time. While the shop’s façade underwent a transformation in 1965, the inside remains largely the same as when it opened. You can still walk in and choose a treat from within wooden showcases, circa 1918, and see the original tin ceiling and floor tiles bearing the Glaser name. (November 2010)
