Janet Baldwin (Explorers Club)

The buildings original owner, Stephen C. Clark (1882-1960), chaired the board of trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1939 to 1945 and founded the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1939. In 1964, the Clark family sold the house at 46 E. 70th Street to the Explorers Club founded by Henry Collins Walsh in 1905. This is the clubs third home in New York City, and it is filled with the artifacts, paintings and writings of its members explorations–such as the ships bell used by Antarctic explorer Admiral Richard F. Byrd, numerous animal heads and skins from around the world, and a unique library of books and maps.
