Place Matters Profile
Thomas Ustick Walter, the fourth Architect of the U.S. Capitol, designed the original Building 92 in 1857 as the Marine Corps Commandants Residence. It is the last standing building of what was a 3.5 acre Marine Barracks Complex and is the only original Walter building in New York City. After an extensive adaptive reuse project by Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation BLDG 92 opened to the public on Veterans Day 2011 to serve as the public gateway to the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard, today a state-of-the-art industrial park. The museum offers free access to exhibits, educational programs, archival resources, workforce development services, and serves as the launch point for popular public tours.

As a physical structure, BLDG 92 embodies the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporations commitment to both historic preservation and sustainable industrial development. Adaptive reuse of the historic structure showcases the beauty of Walters design, including restoration of the original cast iron quoins and lintels. (March 2013)
