Flowing through the heart of the Bronx from the Westchester border to its outlet on the East River, the Bronx River is an environmental, educational, scenic, and historic resource for the people of New York City. Its attractions include Soundview Park, Hunts Point Riverside Park, Concrete Plant Park, Starlight Park, the Bronx River Forest, Shoelace Park and Muskrat Cove, as well as the magnificent Bronx River Gorge in the New York Botanical Garden and Bronx Zoo. Once polluted and trashed, it has been revitalized through citizen activism, and is stewarded today largely by volunteers and non-profit organizations. The quality of the variegated environments and open spaces along the river are essential to its health and beauty, as well as the water quality itself.
