Opened in 1913 as a variety theatre, the Apollo came into its own as a venue for jazz in the 1930s and 40s. The center of Harlem entertainment, the Apollo was known internationally for its cache of major (and minor) swing bands, fronted by some of the most important vocalists of the time. After the 1940s, its heyday as a venue for jazz declined as the Apollo turned more toward R & B, blues, gospel and soul music.
