Join us on Thursday, July 6th to celebrate the publication of Kibbitz & Nosh: When We All Met at Dubrow’s Cafeteria (2023) by Three Hills, an imprint of Cornell University Press. Kibbitz & Nosh is a poignant and poetic visual love letter to the quintessential New York gathering place. We’re thrilled to host Marcia, our long-time friend, in presentation and conversation with Lisa Hurwitz, Director and Producer of the enchanting 2021 documentary film, The Automat.

Kibbitz & Nosh unfolds in the mid 1970s as a photographic essay about a unique dining establishment that was more than just a place to eat for a generation of New Yorkers. There, between the magical mirrored walls and steaming coffee urns, Marcia Bricker Halperin found herself, as if on a theater set, looking out at a tableau of memorable Brooklyn faces. Enchanted by the space and its denizens, she returned again and again.

Kibbitz & Nosh is a collection of photographs that transport the viewer to an essential but forgotten meeting spot, Dubrow’s Cafeteria in 1970s New York City. The Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Donald Margulies and the lauded historian of the Jewish-American experience Deborah Dash Moore provide essays that illuminate and contextualize Halperin’s poignant photographs.

For life-long New Yorkers, Jewish communities, culinary enthusiasts and photography lovers, Kibbitz & Nosh revels in nostalgia and commemorates a time gone by.

Books will be available for purchase on-site at City Lore during the event. Seltzer drinks from Brooklyn Seltzer Boys.
