Nate Speare | Theater Artist, Storyteller, Researcher
I am a theatre-maker with a longtime interest in sound, voice and storytelling. I come from a long line of campfire storytellers, who picked small tales out of their pockets from hundreds of years ago as the fire crackled, and made these stories as tall as the fire itself. I believe it to be the longevity of the bones in the earth that bring these stories to life, making our souls crackle. I begin most of my class sessions with a new folktale to inspire the knowledge of this long-reaching line of story-tellers.
I also come from a line of astrologers and sound/music composers who used natural environmental sounds and the connection between sound, the natural environment, and the characters within the earth and sky are at the core of what I do. I direct and act in plays, sing songs, write essays and use my voice as an active representative of the world to re-ignite a sense of magic in every listener, students and audience members alike. I encourage students to listen to the sounds of their neighborhoods and compose soundscapes with them.
I aim to help my students care about what they say and do through performing plays, telling stories, and listening to the music. It is also my aim to connect each person to the idea that they are not blank slates, but that they entered the world with their own irreplaceable style of talented genius. It is with this understanding that I strive to help students discover said genius in the form of storytelling, theatre and sound composition.
