Azriel Wallace | Dance
Artist’s Statement:
Brooklyn-born with island roots from St.Vincent & the Grenadines, I fell in love with the arts at an early age. While I didn’t speak very much as a child I was extremely responsive to music. I had a particular love for the rhythms of my culture, Soca and Calypso. My passion in singing, dancing, writing, and choreographing would become very apparent to the village around me. Hailing from John Dewey High School’s Dance Ensemble, I studied under John Michael Goring as well as the highly respected Eleo Pomare. I was highly influenced by these two dance artists as they not only gave me my foundation in concert dance but they were also from Caribbean descent. Shortly into my adult years, I began familiarizing myself with the NYC dance community and working with international acts such as Shaggy, Jencarlos Canela, Bunji Garlin, Alison Hinds, and Machel Montano. In 2011, I started giving back to the community through a series of Soca dance fitness classes. Throughout my time of hosting these classes, I would meet many people who would leave feeling mentally and physically empowered. Going forward, I decided that it was my humanitarian duty to bring people joy and healing through movement. 2013 would be the start of a small all-women’s dance company called The Bacchanalists. Starting 2018, I would embark on a life-long dream of writing and recording music with the talented steel pannist and producer, FH3 Beats. Overall, I have been sharing my love and knowledge of the arts with the youth for 17 years. I am very committed to inspiring and cultivating the next generation of leaders and creatives especially through my cultural perspective. Throughout my residency, there is strong emphasis on kindness, unity, diversity, and cultural appreciation for everyone in the classroom.
