Mameloshen: Sharing Songs & Memories of Yiddish-Speaking NYC

March 18, 2015 @ 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

A celebration of Yiddish culture in New York featuring a cappella songs, a sharing of Yiddish objects and words, and discussion about Yiddish culture and language in New York

For centuries, Yiddish songs have been passed down in with informal, unscripted gatherings known as zingerays. Many believe that this tradition is responsible for the continued vibrancy of the Yiddish song tradition.

Led by Ethel Raim of Center for Traditional Music and Dance, this zingeray will feature some of the finest proponents of this time-honored song tradition including, Carol Freeman, Sarah Gordon, Esther Gottesman, Janet Leuchter, Jerry Marcus, and Paula Teitelbaum.

In addition to the Zingeray, Ross Perlin will give a short talk about the history of Yiddish in NYC and Elissa Sampson will invite the audience to share memories of their favorite Yiddish songs, sayings and memories.

Admission is $15.00. Buy tickets here.
