Boardwalk Renaissance Opening Reception
November 5, 2015 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM| Free
Join us for the opening of Boardwalk Renaissance: How the Arts Saved Coney Island. Honky Tonk meets the avant garde our newest exhibition. Take a trip down the Coney Island boardwalk of the 80’s when a group of passionate young artists descended on Coney with the dream that their art might return this legendary neighborhood to its glory days. The vision of these artists – brought to life in artifacts, footage from the first Mermaid parade, and art inspired by the House under the Roller Coaster – lit a creative spark that saw Coney through desperate times and set the stage for the honky tonk neighborhood’s rebirth.
The opening reception will feature, Tommy Stathes of the Cartoon Carnival Series showing rare 8mm and 16mm Coney Island cartoon footage. Come see Tommy’s vintage projector in action and Coney Island like you’ve never seen it before!
Sponsored by the Coney Island History Project, Coney Island Hysterical Society and City Lore.
Produced in tandem with the Coney Island USA’s exhibit, Sodom by the Sea Salon. Also, check out the Brooklyn Museum’s exhibit Coney Island: Vision of an American Dreamland!
