My name is Juan “Juango” Gutiérrez and I grew up in San Juan and studied music at the University of Puerto Rico and the Conservatory of Music in San Juan before moving to NYC in 1976. I continued my music education at the Manhattan School of Music and at Lehman College, where I received a Masters in Music Education. Following my successful career as a Broadway percussionist and arranger, I devoted himself to the study of the Afro-Puerto Rican music traditions of bomba and plena. In l983, I worked with the renowned plenero Marcial Reyes Arvelo, in forming the group Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21) and then became it’s musical director. As a recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship, I have performed at major music festivals and events throughout the world. I was a public school music teacher and teaching artist in New York City public schools for over thirty years.
