The POEMobile Lights Up Staten Island at LUMEN 2012
Bowery Arts + Science and City Lore are collaborating with Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island (COAHSI) Folklife’s “Mobile Heritage Project” to present a selection of poetry, projections, and music from Staten Island’s Sri Lankan, Liberian, and Mexican communities as part of this year’s LUMEN video and performance art festival on the Island’s waterfront.
Irma Flores will present poems in Mixtec, a Mexican indigenous language, Seetha Wickramasuriya will sing Sri Lankan kavi poems in Sinhala, and Liberian folktales will be presented by Ms. Eva of the Park Hill Story Circle. In between each poetry presentation David Suarez, and Victor Soto will play traditional music from Oaxaca. Projections of the poems in English translation as well as animation will be provided by the POEMobile. The POEMobile and LUMEN 2012 will transform Atlantic Salt’s waterfront property into a luminous playground, equipped with cargo containers that have been turned into video screening rooms, and specially formed salt sculptures that will be used as projection screens and installation pieces.
